  • Profile

Innovative studies in tune with modern times

The Musikdesign programme has been developed to master the ever-changing challenges of the music and media industry. Students are being equipped with interdisciplinary skills covering the areas of art and economy, music and media, creation and technology, science and practice. For the first time in the territory of german Universities of Music, a laptop is regarded a fully-fledged music and sound instrument for an entrance examination. What counts most is the artistic talent, especially in unconventional shape: The ability to read notes is not a prerequisite. Musikdesign opens careers in the music and media business. Music inventors and sound designers of the future are being trained. For a best possible learning opportunity, expectations of potential clients, the knowledge of well-established music professionals as well as the experience of university graduates have been incorporated in the development of the courses offered.

High orientation on practical experience through project work and workshops

Musikdesign studies are highly oriented on practical experience: project work on actual assignments straight out of business, internships at companies both in industry and media plus interdisciplinary research occupy a central position in this programme. This is completed by frequent workshops led by specialists and successful personalities of the trade. A major factor of the studies will be the conception, development and optimization of discrete sound, being implemented not only in media application but also in sound design for commercial products. The parameter of ‘sound’ is becoming an important tool of product development and differentiation in a competitive environment at a progressive rate.

  • The entrance examination

The entrance examination comprises of three parts:

    a) Aural theory and theoretical knowledge (duration: about ten minutes)

    • The applicant is granted the opportunity to choose between assignments of Jazz/Pop or classical music.
    • Unanimous melodies are to be noted down or repeated on an instrument of the applicant’s choosing (e.g. voice, piano, guitar, keyboard).
    • Identification of simple chords: number of notes (2-, 3-, 4-note chord), differentiation of major and minor triads.
    • Played rhythms are to be noted down or imitated orally or by clapping.
    • A given chord progression (noted and performed) is to be completed by singing or playing an instrument

    b) Practical part (duration: about ten minutes)

    • Demonstration of a previously prepared piece (performance of music or sound), duration: two to four minutes. Permitted instruments are a laptop with live electronics, piano/keyboard, voice, musical instruments of all kinds, sounding objects; the genre can be freely selected. However, simply playing an audio file will be insufficient. Creative effort has to be identifiable, explicable and, if requested, reproducible.
    • Presentation of a sound example (duration: two to four minutes) having been developed during a preparatory period of three hours on a predetermined topic (poem, picture, video etc.). Permitted media are musical instruments, laptop, body sounds, live-performance, voice, sounding objects, remixes etc.

    c) Colloquium (duration: about ten minutes)

    • Interview with the examination board

The result will be assessed as follows:

    • Examination part a) counts individually, parts b) and c) will be graded as one.
    • Part a) has to be passed, as have to be collectively graded parts b) and c).
    • The final evaluation results from the formula a : (b + c) = 1 : 4
